A few months after moving into my new home, I was invited to submit paintings for consideration to a juried show at the art center in Rocky Mount. I usually avoid these kinds of exhibitions, but I have a history with the art center. In 2000, I had a painting in the same annual exhibition which they acquired as part of their permanent collection.
I entered a peace made after I had moved to NC based on the figurative compositions that I made during my artist residencies in Iceland. The piece is called Dawn Portal — a 4×6 ft. oil on linen. In this composition, I intended to depict the sensation of meeting and merging with the first rays of dawn. The painting was prominently displayed on its own wall and received a third place award.
