Prone to Bruise

In the current resurgence of figurative art, where representation stands at the forefront of critical examination, I find myself grappling with the complexities of identity as a straight cis white male. This introspection has led me to employ the timeless symbol of a banana to explore notions of masculinity, blending elements of comedy and tragedy.
Traditionally, hero mythology places the central figure as a male, often portrayed as a messiah or conqueror celebrated for exceptional qualities. I subvert this archetype by inserting a banana in place of the protagonist with the aim to highlight the pathos and absurdity found in these established mythologies.
The exaggerated grandeur bestowed upon the common banana serves as a metaphor for the inflated egos that have become a toxic burden in our society. In my paintings, men clad in protective suits tenderly support and care for these oversized bananas—imposing and seemingly robust, yet surprisingly fragile and prone to bruising.
