at Durham Arts Guild — Durham, NC

An annual exhibition hosted by one of the most prominent arts guilds in the region. Jurors Allen Thomas, Jr. and Marjorie Hodges — co-founders of Artsuite — selected ~70 works from about 600 entries. My 6 x 4 ft piece titled Gluggaskoðara, was included.

I gave the painting an Icelandic name as it was originally composed during one of the artist residencies that I participated in during 2021. The Icelandic word translates to Window Viewer — we are looking into a pictorial window of someone looking out of a window at perhaps someone else looking through a window and so on.

I started with two smaller color studies which were both sold this past month during my studio sale. You can see them both in the image above. As I have with other paintings in the Dissolution series, I was allowing the materiality of the linen to come through as a middle-ground color and used paint primarily to depict the act of the figure becoming one with light. The large version is currently available and will likely be included in my upcoming exhibition at Barton College in October 2024.
